Another Yellow cab and she found herself in this wonderland of technology. The funny thing Tinkerbell noticed was that New Yorkers, as they called themselves, hardly took notice of this young woman with a pair of luminous green wings poking out from her back. She overheard one old lady say to another, a single word. “Teenagers!” That made her giggle, but after passing by several of this fair city’s citizens, she wasn’t surprised by the comment at all. The city was full of some very strange people.

Inside the store, it wasn’t much different either. People knew who she was, of course, from the news—that instantaneous way people had in this age, with their TVs and cell phones. And yes, she, like Wendy earlier in the day, found herself signing autographs. That, in itself, was a strange thing to her. Why did people want her to write her name? She couldn’t really understand that.


In the store, Tinkerbell was completely taken aback. For long moments, she stood there completely dumbstruck. There was so much choice, and she knew nothing about these devices. So being who she was, with a little, the tiniest sprinkle of dust from her pocket, she only had to wait a few seconds, and three sales assistants were at her side, asking if she needed help. A young man, Jack, was his name, showed her some examples of the latest iPhone. But when Tinker explained her complete unfamiliarity with them, he took her aside and went through it as if he was being a teacher for the day. They used the staff meal room. 

“Okay, Tinker Bell,” Jack said, leaning in as if sharing a secret. “Think of this phone as your very own pixie communicator. It’s like a magic mirror, but with more emojis.”

Tinker Bell blinked, her wings fluttering with anticipation. “Emojis?”

“Yes!” Jack grinned. “Tiny symbols that convey emotions. Like this one.” He tapped the smiley face icon. “It means ‘I’m happy!’”

Tinker Bell squinted at the screen. “But why not just say it?”

Jack chuckled. “Because humans love shortcuts. Now, let’s unlock your phone. Swipe up, like you’re opening a secret door to Neverland.”

Tinker Bell swirled her finger upward, revealing a constellation of apps. “Whoa! So many!”

“Indeed!” Jack pointed. “This one with the X? That is X. Humans argue a lot there. So I wouldn’t bother with that. It’d make your head spin.”


After directions from the lovely lady at Bloomingdale’s, Tinker Bell made her way to the fashion department. She needed a warmer pullover for the colder New York air. She loved the green she had, so she simply bought another, except with the turtleneck to keep her warm. Next stop was the Apple store, that was a must according to Barbara, the girl in fashion. Tinkerbell just had to have a smartphone if she was to make her way around this big modern world—a far cry from 1910 Neverland and London.
