Or was that the point?

That she was not here to offer beauty anymore — but to protect it?

She wanted to cry, but didn’t. The niqab caught her breath, turned it inward. It was like speaking in silence.

The screen dimmed. She stared at the black mirror, her own eyes reflected. Everything else was gone.

Then, she opened her notes app and typed:

“New bio idea:
Not here to be seen.
Here to remember who I am.”*

She saved it.

But didn’t post it.

Not yet. ...

... "The Plan"
Vanessa had barely slept.

Not because of fear. Not exactly.

It was more like her mind had slipped into a quiet acceleration — like standing on the edge of a lake and realizing it’s not just a lake, but the ocean. Once you step in, you won’t touch ground again.

Still wrapped in her oversized sweater, she sat at the kitchen table, tea gone cold beside her. The hijab and niqab she’d tried on the night before lay folded beside her laptop, heavy like folded intent. A decision not yet worn in daylight.

So she made a plan.

She opened a clean page in her notebook — not her journal, but her planner, the one she used for projects, pitches, campaigns.

This would be her most personal one yet.

She wrote carefully. ...

... If she chose this path — the covered path — she couldn’t just hide her face.
She’d have to change the message.
Not “Here I am.”
But “I’m not here for you.”

Could she post without her face?

What would happen to her videos? Her sponsored posts? Would the brands drop her? Would her audience care? Would they mock her? Admire her? Forget her?

And deeper still:
Would she be strong enough to mean it — not just wear it?

The niqab, still on her face, began to feel heavier.
