

Photorealist artists use a variety of mediums to recreate images, including paint, charcoal, pastels, pencils, and oil. They often include technical challenges, such as reflections, glass, and the effects of light. Photorealism rejected the painterly qualities by which individual artists could be recognized and instead strove to create pictures that looked photographic. Visual complexity heightened clarity, and a desire to be emotionally neutral led to banal subject matter that likened the movement to pop art.
