He retrieved his sword as the dragon twitched and bled upon the steps of the palace. Crowds of citizens were gathering to stare aghast and awe struck at the colossal dragon's destruction.

He stood before the throngs. "People of Almecca! Hear me! I am Baratoum! Your prince!"

A hush fell over them as he spoke. "You do not know me. That is because I have been kept from you! Locked away! By a madman! My father, Ferlamund, whom all call the shadow king, for the illness of mind that plagues him. But I will be held in his shadow no longer!"

Baratoum leapt nimbly atop the dragons back. "This beast is an omen! Dark times are upon us! Times of death and flames, you see how they ravage our noble city. Join with me and protect our beloved kingdom. For now, let us put out fires, mourn our dead and rebuild. I will be with you in these great trials, I ask only for your loyalty!"

"Baratoum!" A citizen cried out, others followed and the chanting of his name became a thunderous din.

Empress Foleil sat the Twilight Throne and gazed into the surface of the artefact. The mirror was silent until she said the invocation. Upon completion, silent lightning crawled across its surface and a baleful face appeared.

"The Empress of Kiervaar, what an honor." He smiled.

"Return my daughter or I'll unleash annihilation upon you, Baratoum. You have 72 hours."

"Straight to business, then. A sober threat. You live up to your legend. My mother tells me it was your ruthless subversion of the Shining Force that snatched victory from defeat."

"Mark the time. I may be unable to locate her, but I can find you, princeling. I imagine your location would be of interest to Almecca."

He barked a laugh. "I'm curious if you can, Empress. Let's find out. I'll speak to you again when your ominous deadline expires."

The mirror went opaque. Foleil placed her chin on her palm. After several moments, she spoke to her herald, Semeron Dain. "Send in Qowl. He is going to wake the dead for me."

Kamachrichthyon flew to the high plateau and set down. The imperial princess dismounted and walked into the quiet fortress.

The halls were ancient and dank, torchlight created pools in the stretching darkness. Finally she stood before him, lounging casually on a throne. She raised her chin and regarded him quietly.

Baratoum sneered. "Welcome, princess. Amourn Tor is an ancient stronghold, from long before Almecca was united, forgotten, by most. You'll find its accomodations less opulent than you're used to."

She stepped closer. "It needs a great deal of renovation, but the location is ideal, high vantages, only two points of approach, easily defended. Spacious enough to house a formidable host."

He was quiet a moment. "You are your mother's daughter, aren't you. Good. I've been raising a host, slowly, quietly. We must spin spiderwebs if we're to challenge Almecca. Let us discuss the future."

no... I feel it may only be partially possible to reproduce the backlit illumination I was going for. I will eventually do it, but I will also laboriously label all my dataset pics to try to get the best effect out of them.

The planet is tidal locked to the local star, Vashini, a red dwarf in the Opheon cluster, likely an extra solar capture, millions of years ago.

No surface evidence of civilization or cultivation, but the canyons are.. curious. Hive like burrows, miles wide and deep, but with a mathematical precision that almost certainly denotes intelligent construction.

In all my years as an apprentice exo-archaeologist and now on my own, I've never encountered such vast evidence of habitation with so absolutely little evidence of culture or even trace remains of the species.

My ship, The Raconteur, says it pinged an alien AI on arrival, but received no further transmission. Why would it make contact and then radio silence? Some last gasp protocol of an ancient, failing automated system? This bears further investigation.

Something about this place feels like a hive, but also like tomb.
