Fan Kuan (c. 960–1030) was a Chinese landscape painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, best known for his monumental masterpiece Travelers Among Mountains and Streams. A master of the shan shui (mountain-water) tradition, he emphasized nature’s grandeur through towering peaks, intricate textures, and a sense of atmospheric depth. Rejecting courtly influences, he sought inspiration directly from nature, embodying Daoist and Neo-Confucian ideals in his work.
