Hildy isn't like most girls. She's a protist in that she resembles both a plant and an animal. Like a carnivorous plant, she gets nutrients from her food. Like kelp, she can absorb nutrients from water. To get calories, she needs food or photosynthesis.
Light does not give her enough energy to be really active. Plus, being a "girl" who doesn't have leaves or roots, there are practical considerations. This includes the fact that it's safer for her to be active at night.
