This fear really fascinates me, in part because it’s a fairly new phenomenon. It became a very common fear in the late 20th century, but before then, clowns were just party entertainment. Why do you think they suddenly became evil?

I think it's the pop-culture presence of "evil clowns," to be honest. In my case, I used to have nightmares about a "face in the wall" above my bed, which was really just a series of knots in the wood of the wall that looked like a face. Well my mother, who was a saint, loved clowns, and even did some clown stuff when I was younger, so I liked clowns too, and so she made me a small felt clown, stuff with cotton, and mounted on a frame made of a paper plate. Then she hung it over "the face in the wall," so I wouldn't be scared. This worked wonders for me, but after a while I started to have nightmares about the clown. Haha, so it wasn't really "the face," it was just me, as a very small child having irrational fears about whatever I was seeing. Unfortunately while I no longer fear any sort of faces staring at me in the night, I developed a fairly severe fear of clowns. Seeing IT as a younger child (with Tim Curry being the scariest mofo ever), didn't help this, haha. 

I'm doing a small series of images based on fears. With the exception of Thalassophobia, these are mostly fears that I am trying to overcome. Feel free to suggest fears you'd like to see depicted as well, and I will try to make them also. 

For those also trying to overcome fears, I recommend taking small steps every day to face them in order to overcome them. 

In the case of Thalassophobia, or more accurately Aquaphobia, I learned to swim as an adult after spending time in shallow pools each day, graduating myself to deeper and deeper sections of pools, and then finally large bodies of water. 

Some fears are harder to conquer than others, due to their irrational nature, but I hope that by making some imagery of these fears, as I attempt to overcome them myself, it will help me approach my own fears more rationally, and eventually be able to set them aside.
