Quaggas were a subspecies of the plains zebra (Burchell's zebra); they were hunted to extinction in the 19th century.

The terms *quagga* and *kwagga* are still used colloquially to refer to extant zebras.  (The "gg" sound is similar to the gutteral "ch" as in Scottish loch.)  The word itself is onomatopoeic, imitating the sounds made by all zebras.
