I find it weird how well those red eyes show when the fly is still and sitting on something.

We used fruit flies in biology labs studying genetics. It was funny how poorly eggs hatched into larvae and then adult flies. Some standard diet was used as a medium. I said I should take them home to grow since if I miss a fruit starting to rot in my kitchen, I have no trouble whatsoever raising fruit flies! 😂

We'd give the flies a small whiff of ether to make them easier to handle. The lab instructor explained that any more than that would kill them and we'd know by the wings sticking out at right angles to the body. One guy seriously asked (in concern) what would happen to us if we ended up smelling some too. I couldn't help myself saying "Your arms will stick out at right angles too" and quickly demonstrated. It cracked up the entire class as well as the instructor! I'm not a class clown but I can't help interjecting humour where appropriate.😁

On the off chance that you don't already know about sterile male mass releases for managing insect pests, it's worth googling "sterile insect technique".

Your observation about the wing position intrigues me.  I'll try to find out whether this is the natural neutral position as with dragonflies and medflies, or whether it suggests muscle spasm.

Yes, I know about sterile male releases. It's used to control a lot of harmful insects. Sometimes when a concerted effort in made, the insect can be eradicated like warble flies are in some European countries. Other times, while they haven't been eradicated, their numbers can be seriously reduced like the effort made to curtail the spread of the Zika  virus. All this work takes money, time and the cooperation and coordination  of  various countries and/or states and  that doesn't always happen due to politics and conflicting interests.

No, I can assure you that the right angle wing position is not a natural resting position for fruit flies. In fact, it's not a resting position for all but a few species among the *Diptera* order except some tachinid flies and a few others. But even then, their wings don't stick at a stark right angle to the body. It never occurred to me that it was likely a muscle spasms as the fruit fly died quickly. That's a good hypothesis!
