We entered the next hall and stopped suddenly.
We had found the books, yes, but there were two big problems: the first was the number of volumes -- on the shelves, which completely covered the walls, there must have been thousands of them.
And the second was the man.
He was some kind of friar, wearing a brown cassock that seemed to blend in with the unnatural light filtering through the large windows.
Beside me, I heard Mary whisper something.
Without even turning, I reached out a hand and put it over her mouth, nodding my head from side to side. "Shh."
We had to wait for the man to leave.
Absolutely motionless. In total silence.
The book was there. I was certain of that.
