After Arthur Rimbaud went abroad in 1875, Paul Verlaine took up positions as a language and art teacher in various French and English high schools. In 1877, in Rethel, France, he met his student, Lucien Létinois, with whom he fell in love and moved in together. This happy period of Verlaine's life with the calm and balanced farmer boy ended when the young man died of typhus five years later.
Verlaine was inconsolable. In his next volume, he dedicated a cycle of 25 poems to Lucien.
However, Verlaine said to a friend before his death that Rimbaud was his eternal love.
This 1877 scene captures Paul Verlaine teaching his student Lucien to draw in a French school. Both men, in painter's coats, share a tender moment as they create art together.

Nice... Makes me think of something a famous artist once said, that "I close my eyes to see." Ocular seeing can be such a distraction to reality, making us think we're seeing "things" when really we're only perceiving the sun's light reflecting off of them, for instance.
