This reminds me of a rather terrible phenomenon I read about, people playing music in an environment where you would least expect it. 
Never mind the details, just to say the image came home to me.

I based this off the The Spirit of the RMS Titanic: And the Band Played On , where the band played hymns to calm the passengers as the titanic sank

I surmised that. 
Short detail: I learned that the prisoners of death camps who  played an instrument were forced to amuse the camp staff but also to play  at um... executions.
