𐤀 ’ālep is the word for cattle (ox, bull or cow) and refers to the initial glottal stop [ʔ] spoken before the vocal. It is the picture of a bull’s head, presumably based on an Egyptian model, which can still be recognized in the Greek and Indian script families. The letter became the Hebrew א and the (not so similar) Arabic ا . In Greek the letter was reinterpreted as the vowel A. The Brāhmī vowel 𑀅 is most likely derived from it and became the Devanāgarī अ.
