His father, Commander Richard Davenport, was calm and methodical as usual, his expression unreadable behind his aviators. This was his world, and he moved with the easy confidence of someone who had spent thousands of hours in the cockpit. As they reached the plane, Richard stopped and turned to Will.

“Alright,” Richard said, his voice steady but serious. “Before we do anything, you need to understand something: this isn’t just a thrill ride. This is a machine designed to operate in extreme conditions, and if something goes wrong, there’s no room for error.”

Will nodded, his pulse quickening. “I get it.”

Richard studied him for a moment before continuing. “We’re going to go through some basic safety procedures first. In case anything happens, you need to know exactly what to do.”

Will listened intently as his father walked him through the ejection seat procedure, the importance of checking oxygen flow, and how to handle G-forces. The F-14 was built to endure speeds and pressures the human body wasn’t naturally equipped for, and knowing how to manage the effects of high-speed flight was crucial.

“The ejection handle is right between your legs,” Richard said, pointing to the mechanism in the rear cockpit where Will would be sitting as the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). “If things go south, pull that and it’ll launch you clear of the jet. Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but don’t hesitate if you do.”

Will swallowed hard, imagining what it would feel like to be hurled out of a jet at supersonic speeds. “Got it.”

“Next, you’ll need to monitor your oxygen mask and make sure you’re breathing normally. The higher we go, the thinner the air gets. If you feel lightheaded or like you’re going to pass out, let me know immediately.”

Richard paused, his eyes scanning Will’s face to make sure the information was sinking in. Will nodded again, more seriously this time. The gravity of what they were about to do was starting to settle in.

The base was alive with activity as Will and his father approached the runway. Yokosuka Naval Base stretched out before them, with the steady hum of jets preparing for takeoff, the clang of maintenance crews working on the planes, and the faint smell of jet fuel hanging in the crisp morning air. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the F-14 Tomcats lined up on the tarmac looked like sleek, powerful beasts ready to roar into the sky.

Will’s heart pounded with excitement and nerves as they walked toward their assigned Tomcat. He’d been around planes his entire life, thanks to his father’s Navy career, but he’d never experienced one like this—up close, inside the cockpit, feeling the raw power of one of the fastest jets in the world.
