Beautiful trees, and our Australian 'Boab" trees, (unique and iconic species native to the northern regions of Western Australia and the Northern Territory), belong to the same genus. 'Boab' is a corruption of the Arabic of African origin meaning 'father of many seeds'. There are 8 species of Baobabs, 2 on the African mainland and the others in Madagascar. So, the question botanists ask is "How did a species whose only living relative lies nearly 10,000kms away on the other side of the Indian Ocean, end up in an isolated corner of Western Australia? The origin of our Boab is one of botany's great conundrums. Botanists all agree on one thing - that is that the boab isn't a Gondwanan remnant. The breakup of the super-continent saw Australia, Africa and Madagascar detach from each other more than 120 million years ago. So, shall we ever get the answer ? (Sorry for all this rambling, dear Fizz, but it is intriguing isn't it?)
