“Please,” Magdalena whispered. “Take me north. I will pay you with anything you desire. I can return to Spain, to my husband. This place is cursed.”

The guard shook his head. “There is no safe road. Algiers hunts for your heads.”

Magdalena’s tears glittered in the pale light. Anna stepped forward, her voice quiet but cutting.

“You would betray them all for your freedom alone?”

Magdalena fell to her knees, sobbing. “I never wanted this. I want to go home.”

Anna crouched, lifting her chin with gentle fingers.

“We all want home,” she said softly. “But do not burn the bridge others must cross behind you.”

The dawn broke in rose-gold light. Anna bent over a shallow pool, rinsing her face. A sudden dizziness gripped her. Her hands pressed against her belly, and a tremor of wonder flickered through her.

Later, when Amastan returned from scouting the dunes, she took his hand and placed it upon her abdomen.

“There is life here,” she whispered

His eyes widened. A rare softness spread across his fierce features. He knelt, pressing his forehead to her belly, murmuring prayers in Tamasheq.

“Azul,” he said finally, looking up at her with tears brimming. “We will name him Azul. It means ‘freedom’.”

Anna smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek.

“Freedom… the first gift I will give him.”
