“Understandable,” The two women sat in considerable silence for some time, sipping their tea.

“Are you ready to pray, Izzy?” Helena asked. 
“I guess so,” Fairbairn replied, Helena got out her breviary and her other volume for Fairbairn to use. She opened the volume to Compline and gave the book to Fairbairn. Once they were recollected, Helena motioned for Fairbairn to stand. She did so and Helena made the Sign of the Cross. For the first time, Fairbairn did so too.

“God, Come to My Assistance…”


The Next Morning after breakfast, SG-24 and CB-3 went to Simon's office. Simon was Meeting with council elders. Behind Simon’s seat was a blackboard. On it were the words “FAMILIES INFECTED BY THE LADY: 3.” 

Larkin Stiffened. Had they walked into a hazmat situation? He cautiously greeted Simon. “Good morning, Simon.”

Simon rose. He wondered why Larkin stood so far away, when they had stood close just a couple of days earlier. “Colonel, are you alright?” he asked. 

“I was going to ask you the same question,” Larkin replied. “Is everything alright?”

“I'm fine,” Simon said. “Are you?”

“I'm fine as well,” Larkin said. 

Sister Helena studied the board closely and understood what “FAMILIES INFECTED BY THE LADY” meant. She tugged at the Colonel's sleeve. “Sir, they’re not sick, more adults have the Lady's Nish’ta.”


Larkin understood, acknowledged Helena and moved closer to Simon. He extended his hand. “Sorry about that. We thought people were getting sick.”

Simon took Larkin's hand and shook it. “Oh we’re fine,” he said. “However, we have a new problem. Several families here in Eversham have begun to exhibit signs of devotion to the Lady. They behave as if they were in a trance.”


Helena shuddered. “That is disturbing. Now the Lady's presence is spreading to the Adults. What are we going to do about it?”

“The Colonel wants us to go tomorrow to Zat him. I’m also to bring smelling salts to revive him quickly. Hopefully we'll find out what happened to him.”

“I see,” said Helena. “And I'm to Zat him?”

“Yes, I want to be by his side when he wakes; He did see me at the tavern.”

“Understood,” said Helena. “Though it will feel a little strange. But I'll do my duty.”

“Good girl,” said Fairbairn. She took a sip of her tea. “Oy! This is good!” 

“Thank you, Izzy,” Helena replied. “It's my own special blend.” 

“That's so cool!”

“It is indeed!” Helena exclaimed with pride. She paused. “So how was Edward?”
