But as it turns out, there was more to the story than just a playful clown and a circus poster. It was rumored that the clown was actually an aristocrat who had fallen from grace and taken to the circus as a means of survival. His painted-on smile was a mask of its own, hiding the pain and humiliation of his fall from the upper echelons of society.
As audiences flocked to the circus to witness the strange and exotic, little did they know that the very performers they were watching may have once been part of the very same society that had once shunned them. The masquerade of the 1700s had given way to the masquerade of the circus, where performers could hide behind their personas and entertain the masses, free from the judgment of their former peers.
Once upon a time, in the 1700s, aristocrats in Europe enjoyed throwing lavish masquerade balls, where they would wear ornate masks and costumes to conceal their identities and indulge in playful and sometimes scandalous behavior. The masks allowed them to let loose without fear of social repercussions, and the events became a symbol of the decadent lifestyle of the upper classes.
Fast forward to the 1920s in America, and the circus was all the rage. Circus performers were celebrities, and the posters advertising their shows were works of art in themselves. One particular poster featured a clown, his face painted in a permanent grin, inviting audiences to step right up and enjoy the spectacle.

And so, the circus poster with the clown from the 1920s became a symbol of the hidden pain and struggles of those who had fallen from grace and the power of the mask to conceal their true identities.
