“And you can't negotiate with them either. They will not hesitate to kill every single man, woman and child in Eversham,” Fairbairn put in.

“How will you accomplish this? The vegetation around the village is dense. It would take your men many days to complete the task,” a council member asked.

“We have machines that can do the work in a day. Machines that do not require the need of horses,” said McClendon.

“By St. Loy!” exclaimed Simon

“I must stress that our machines are not magic or witchcraft. They are just that—Machines, We can show them to you and the villagers,” said Helena.

“But we'll ask that everyone keep away from the machines as they could injure someone,” said Eule. “We'll bring our machines into the monastery at night, but unless we
explicitly say otherwise no one is to come near three yards of the machine.”

“That makes sense,” said one councilor.

“When would you like to demonstrate your machines?” another councilor asked.

The Seabees looked at each other and then McClendon spoke, “We could demonstrate them at five o’clock.” 

“If I may add, Commander, that would before Evensong,” said Helena.

“Just let us know when you are ready and we will summon the village,” said Simon.

“Perfect,” said Larkin.

Simon took Larkin aside. “Do what you can to preserve the peace of Eversham and the planet.” 

“Understood,” said Larkin. After exchanging goodbyes with Simon and the council, SG-24 and the Seabees returned to the Monastery. It was determined that Pfluger would stay and work with his team; Helena and Fairbairn would visit the infected families.

“Helena, wear your habit for this mission,” said Larkin. “The people might be a bit more responsive to you. Fairbairn will cover you.”

“Understood, Colonel,” replied Helena. She went to her quarters to change into her habit, though she left her black t-shirt and uniform pants on in case she needed to don the rest of her gear.

“Use me,” she whispered as she kissed her scapular; She placed it on over her tunic. Helena knelt in prayer, her head bowed and folded her hands.

“We want to shore up Eversham's defenses. We believe there is an impending attack by this ‘Lady’ and her forces. What we'd like to start with first is to clear an area of thirty meters.”

“Commander, they don't know about metric,” said Fairbairn. She spent a lot of time in the Chambers Street Museum in Edinburgh and learned about Medieval measurements. “For them a meter is about a yard.”

“Thank you, Squadron Leader,” McClendon said. He turned back to Simon and the council. “We would like to clear an area of thirty yards around the village. It will help us have a clear light of sight if the Lady's troops attack the village.”

“She has troops?” Simon asked.
