The Seabees arrived at the monastery an hour later and SG-24 stood outside to meet them.

Their leader was Lieutenant Commander Gordon McClendon of the Royal Australian Navy, who was tall and sparse, straight as a yard arm. The silver at his temples caught the fading light and his sharp gaze swept the courtyard like a man already calculating defenses pull up abilities. There was nothing hurried about him, but nothing wasted either dash he radiated efficiency.

Just to his right walked Kapitänleutnant Georg Eule of the German Navy, helmet clipped to his belt, dark hair slicked back under the weight of the march. There was a European sharpness to him, all clean angles and immaculate gear placement, as if he stepped out of a training manual. When his lips curled into a faint grin, it was with the knowledge of with the knowing ease of someone who had seen worse and lived to tell the tale.

Behind them came chef Chief Petty Officer Jedidiah “Jed” Pfluger of the United States Navy, his gear shifted slightly more craft than the others, his P90 slung casually over one shoulder, his reddish blonde hair struck out of his cap, and there was a glint of dry humor in his bright eyes.

And then there was Leading Seamen Stuart Wright of the Royal New Zealand Navy, shorter than the others and wiry as a coiled spring. His easy grin broke the tension in the courtyard, but there was a fire in his bright eyes. The look of a man who had seen his share of danger and wasn't afraid to face it again. His tussled hair gave him the appearance of someone who had just come off a fast ride, his posture was steady, almost defiant as he slung P90 and waited for orders.


Commander McClendon extended his hand and Larkin shook it. “Lieutenant Commander Gordon McClendon, CB-3,” he said.

“Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Larkin, SG-24,” Larkin said.

“Allow me to present my team: my XO Kapitänleutnant Georg Eule, my specialists Chief Petty Officer Jedediah Pfluger, and Leading Seaman Stewart Wright,” said McClendon.

“My XO Squadron Leader Isolde Fairbairn, my cultural advisor Sister Helena of the Cross, and my tactical specialist Oversersjant Gunnar Bjornson,” Larkin replied. Handshakes were exchanged by both team members.


“We've got an incoming wormhole,” said Fairbairn. She looked at the tablet for an IDC. Receiving Construction Battalion 3’s IDC.” 

“Lower the shield,” said Larkin. Fairbairn did so and a voice emanated from Larkin’s comms.

“Sierra Golf Two-Four, this is Charlie Bravo Three actual. Come in please.” The voice was part Scottish and part Australian.

“Charie Bravo Three actual this is Sierra Golf Two-Four actual. We read you. Welcome to Eversham.”

“Thank you, Sir. We're coming in with ATV's and several FREDs,” the voice said.

“Acknowledged. Cut your engine 3 Klicks out from the village. We don't want to spook them,” said Larkin.

“Understood,” the voice said. “We'll come on foot then. We'll contact you when we get to 3 Klicks out.”

“Sounds good. We'll wait for your signal. Sierra Golf Two-Four out.”
