**1993: Fridays at Finni's. Part 1.**

**6:30 a.m.**
A 13-year-old boy has a lot of things he loves. For example, the 386 over there. 21 megahertz clock speed, 20 megabyte hard drive. Finni really appreciates it, he practically worships it. Sometimes I get the feeling he loves it more than me. And yet this computer can't do what *I* can.

Then there are those boxes on the shelf. LucasArts adventures. Finni has played them all, several times, and every time he's lost track of time.

And then there are the photos on the wall. Steve, Danny, and Luke. For some time now, Finni has been calling them his “best friends forever.” [You can read the story here:]

He has this sparkle in his eyes when they're here or when he's on the phone with one of them. I don't know what they say to him, but it seems to work better than any alarm clock.

**Part 2. 6:32 a.m.** I don't think he loves *me* very much. I've been serving him faithfully for years – tirelessly, precisely, reliably. And what do I get in return? Grumbling ingratitude.

He lies there peacefully, snoring. One foot dangles out of the bed, one arm hangs down beside it. I think people could at least offer their alarm clocks a slightly more dignified view if they're going to watch over them all night long.

**6:44 a.m.** Finally. My big moment is coming.

**6:45** I set the alarm. A well-composed cacophony of shrill alarm tones and the current radio program. Technically a masterpiece—but what happens?

Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Finni mumbles something incomprehensible and rubs his eyes. And then – like every morning – he hits me on the head with the flat of his hand.

Why all this grumbling? How about a friendly:
“Good morning, my dear alarm clock! Thank you for your loyal service!”

But no. I am ignored, pushed away, misunderstood.

**Part 3.** Life as an alarm clock is hard. Ungrateful. And I'm the first thing he sees every day. “Five more minutes of cuddle time!” Finni mumbles. All right. Five minutes. But then no more cuddling. Then my day begins – and his Friday. And I can already feel that it's going to be one of those special ones again.

**6:51 a.m.** That was six minutes. I don't want to be like that. Finally, something's happening. Finni struggles out of bed, shuffles across the carpet, stretches half-heartedly, and turns on his desk lamp. He yawns, looks at the wall—where the photos of his friends hang. Steve. Danny. Luke.

And there it is: the smile. “Yeah, it's Friday!” he shouts. Then he disappears into the bathroom. I'll let him enjoy his euphoria.

**7:39 a.m.** Shower, get dressed, breakfast, brush teeth, style hair – checklist complete. Now quickly find some socks and shoes – and off you go, Finni! Meanwhile, I'll stay here and provide a reliable time reference.
