The Church Grim. In English and Scandinavian folklore, a being of spectral origin, shrouded in mystery and steeped in legend. In the depths of the night, when the moon is full and the stars are obscured, it is said that the Church Grim comes to life. Its form, that of a black dog, blends with the shadows, and its eyes, glowing like hot coals, pierce the veil between the living and the dead.

For centuries, the Church Grims have watched over the welfare of particular churches, guarding the souls of the departed and keeping malevolent spirits at bay. Its presence is felt most keenly in bad weather and on dark nights, when the ringing of church bells echoes through the air like a mournful dirge.

In English folklore, the Church Grims' love for the ringing of church bells is well known. And on a full moon, when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, the Church Grim's appearance is accompanied by the haunting sound of a funeral bell tolling in the distance.

In Swedish folklore, the Church Grim is believed to be an animal spirit, sacrificed during the construction of a new church. It is said that in the early Middle Ages, before Christianity had eradicated pagan rituals, the spirits of animals were called upon to protect the holy place from evil forces.

And in the kingdoms of Britain and Scandinavia, until the late Middle Ages, a gruesome ritual was carried out to create the Church Grim. A black dog was buried alive at the northern wall of a church under construction. Left to slowly die, its poor soul was believed to become a guardian spirit, protecting the church and its graveyard from the Devil's influence...

In the churchyard old and gray, 
Lies a creature, grim and tall, 
Whose presence keeps the ghosts at bay
And wards off evil, one and all.

With eyes like coals and fur like soot, 
He stands guard, night after night, 
And those who dare to trespass, kaput!
For they'll face the grim's frightful might.

But fear not, ye pious souls. 
For the church grim is on your side.
And though he may seem grim and cold, 
He's a faithful companion, tried and true, by your side.

Through the centuries he's stood
An ever-watchful sentinel,
Protecting those who've passed for good
From the forces of the infernal.

And though his form may fade and fray
As the years roll slowly by, 
The church grim's duty will not sway
He'll guard the faithful till the end of time.
