“I've seen the false light before. It burns everything it touches,” said Sister Helena.

For a moment the six young people stood silent but then one of them began to laugh and began to chant again.

“Aldwine! Aldwine! Aldwine! Listen to the bells in your head Aldwine! Aldwine! Aldwine!” Sister Helena took Maerwynn’s hand and walked toward through the young people calmly without saying a word.


Once they were far enough away. Sister Helena asked Maerwynn, “What does Aldwine mean and usually?”

“It means wise elder,” Maerwynn replied. “It’s usually reserved for Papa, the town council, or Father Anselm. Ever since the Lady arrived the Lady's followers has used it in a mocking way.” Helena understood all too well the turmoil of pejorative names back on Earth. “Why would they do that why do they do it?” Merwin asked.

“It's something they don't understand. Which is most things,” Helena replied. “Let me go with you to Miss Shakespeare's house.” Maerwynn pointed in the direction they needed to go, and they set off in silence. When they got to Miss Shakespeare's house, Maerwynn knocked on the door.

A woman in her early 30s with dark brown hair and green eyes and a trim figure answered the door.


“Hello, Maerwynn,” said Miss Shakespeare. 

“Hello, Miss Shakespeare,” said Maerwynn. “Here are the things Mama says you'll need for your class next week. She'll tell you more on Monday.”

“Thank you, Maerwynn. I look forward to working with your mother,” Miss Shakespeare said. She noticed Sister Helena standing next to the girl. “And who is this?”

“This is my friend, Sister Helena of the cross,” Maerwynn replied. “She's from a place called... Kansas.”

“A pleasure to meet you, Sister Helena,” said Miss Shakespeare. “Margaret Shakespeare. Welcome to Eversham!”


“Thank you, Miss Shakespeare.” Helena wondered, “*Could she be a relative of the Bard?*” as they left the house to go to Simon and Mary's house. 

“Who are you?” Winifred asked. “I've never seen you before.”

“I'm Sister Helena of the Cross and...” she chose her words carefully, not wanting to divulge that she had come through the Stargate. “…from a faraway land called Kansas.”

“Hail to the Walker-in-Chains!” said one of the boys in a mocking way as he “bowed” to Sister Helena. “Aldwine!”*

“Aldwine! Aldwine! Aldwine!” the six young people chanted in eerie unison. They laughed wild and giddy. Sister Helen said nothing. Her expression was steady and unreadable. She let the young people jeer at her and Maerwynn. Helena’s eyes rested on each one of them as if she was memorizing their faces—not in judgment, but in sorrow.
