Like "Wild Goose Chase," the term "Snipe Hunt," has become jargon for "a fool's errand." This has lead many people to believe that snipe's are not real animals/birds.
The term Snipe Hunt is named so because their erratic flight patterns makes them exceedingly difficult to shoot or hunt. Those who successfully hunted snipes have historically been held in high regard as precision/remarkable marksmen, and these marksmen are where the term "Sniper," is derived from. Though snipe are not hunted for their taste, or beauty, having hunted and "bagged" one was, and is, a source of pride among marksmen.
Thanks for coming to Quiet Volcano's TED Talk about Snipes.
This image shows a beautiful Great Snipe in its natural habitat. The bird features striped feathers and is set against a backdrop of reeds and a clear lake, rendered with photorealistic detail.
