The guard shook his head. “There is no safe road. Algiers hunts for your heads.”

Magdalena’s tears glittered in the pale light. Anna stepped forward, her voice quiet but cutting.

“You would betray them all for your freedom alone?”

Magdalena fell to her knees, sobbing. “I never wanted this. I want to go home.”

“There is life here,” she whispered

His eyes widened. A rare softness spread across his fierce features. He knelt, pressing his forehead to her belly, murmuring prayers in Tamasheq.

“Azul,” he said finally, looking up at her with tears brimming. “We will name him Azul. It means ‘freedom’.”

Anna smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek.

“Freedom… the first gift I will give him.”
