I seem to have far more success with images than with text...
I think I got lucky. This combo worked well, others didn't strike the right balance between changing the 'style' and retaining the feel of the original.

After a b/w mugshot from about 1900. High contrast between foreground and background and neutral background helps to make then image recognizable. The image can be magnified with good results.
