Hearing sound for the first time in her life will catch her by surprise. She wasn't properly briefed on the procedure (likely involving stem cell research).

By the way, she usually didn't sleep on that particular bed. (In some lives, little rebellions are precursors to larger revolutions. And the revolution Melantha gets involved in will alter the history of an entire planet.)
