After him!” Karl shouted, his voice raw from the night’s exertion. “He’s wounded!”

The men hesitated, their weapons still raised, but Karl could see the fear in their eyes. The wolf was injured, but not dead. It would take more than a musket shot to bring down the Devil’s beast. Still, they moved forward, their steps slow and cautious, as they pressed into the trees in pursuit of the fleeing creature.

Peter ran.

His body burned with pain, the muscles in his legs straining as he pushed himself deeper into the forest, his vision blurred with rage and agony. The bullet had shattered his shoulder, sending a cascade of blood down his side, but it wasn’t just the physical pain that consumed him—it was the humiliation. The great, terrible wolf, the scourge of Bedburg, had been brought low by a single musket shot. He could feel the darkness closing in, his vision swimming as he stumbled over the rough terrain.

He had to keep moving. The scent of the villagers was still in the air, their torches faint but relentless behind him. But he couldn’t go far—not with the wound slowing him down, and not with the pounding in his skull that came with every breath.

As he ran, Peter’s sharp senses picked up something else—a familiar scent. The minister’s house was just ahead, its small, unguarded garden nestled at the edge of the village. A twisted grin curled Peter’s bloody lips. The minister, who had filled the villagers' heads with lies of God’s protection, would suffer tonight.

Inside the house, young Jakob Dietrich, the minister’s son, sat alone by the fire, oblivious to the hunt raging outside. His father had gone out earlier, joining the villagers in the manhunt, and left Jakob with strict instructions to stay indoors. But Jakob, barely seven winters old, wasn’t afraid. He trusted in the cross that hung around his neck, a gift from his father—a symbol of God’s protection.

The sharp crack of the musket echoed through the forest like a thunderclap, cutting through the chaos of the night. For a moment, everything seemed to stop—the frantic movements of the villagers, the wild flicker of the torches, and even the howl of the wind through the trees.

Peter felt the burning impact before he heard the shot. The bullet tore through his shoulder, ripping muscle and shattering bone, sending a shockwave of pain through his body. He let out a low, feral growl, stumbling back from his latest victim, his vision blurred by the sudden rush of blood and adrenaline. His chest heaved as he staggered, instinct forcing him to retreat into the shadows, away from the light of the mob’s torches.

Karl lowered his musket, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he watched the beast stagger back into the trees, blood dripping from its dark fur. The shot had landed, but it wasn’t enough. Not yet. They had him on the run, but the wolf was still dangerous—desperate now.
