“Good evening, Miss Fairbairn," he said. He looked at her for a moment. To him she wore strange clothes, stranger than her uniform. But she was still beautiful.

“You look beautiful,” said Edward. 

Fairbairn blushed. “Why thank you, Edward.” Edward extended his hand and Fairburn took it. The two walked from the monastery to the tavern.

“How are you, Miss Fairbairn?” 

“Doing alright,” Fairbairn replied. “Just a busy day at the base. How are you?”

“Busy myself. Godric had us doing combat drills this afternoon.”

“Ah, combat drills! The best part of the day in my opinion. They build teamwork in character.”

“Oh yes,” replied Edward, with a hint of nervousness in his voice.

“You don't seem so thrilled."

I don't. I never was meant to be a soldier. From when I was little, I heard tales from bards and gleemen about the vanquishers, er…what do you call them?"

“SG-1.”


“And I wished I could write tales about them. And I have written many tales and ballads about the vanquishers, among others.”

“You play?” Fairbairn asked.

“The lute,” Edward replied. “Ever since I saw the gleeman play his lute, I wanted to learn how. One was kind enough to give me a lute and taught me how to play. Over the years gleeman from other villages have taught me new styles of play and new chords.”

“There are other villages?”

“Four that we know of so far. They’re about 10 miles from Eversham.”

“*Makes sense,*” Fairbairn thought. “*They would need to be close by for Sokar’s flunkies to cull hosts.*” To Edward, she said, “That sounds interesting, Edward. So these gleemen, they come for festivals? What sort of festivals?” Fairbairn asked.


“We keep the year by our feasts you see. Christmas and Easter are the Great Days with candles, and feasting enough to fill the tavern’s great hall. In the spring we have the Mayfair, with dancing around the maypole and Midsummer brings bonfires and sport. However, we mark Michaelmas for giving thanks for the Lord's bounty and Hallowtide which we keep solemn with bells for the dead. There's also the Festival of Deliverance when we recall when the false Demon was cast down. Often gleemen come to the Mayfair and Michaelmas, though they occasionally might come for Christmas.”

“They sound wonderful, Edward. They remind me of some of the festivals back home,” said Fairbairn.


“If you'll excuse me, gentlemen,” said Fairbairn, “I need to get going. There will be time afterwards for you boys to get to know me.”

“Where's she going off to?” Wright asked.

“Fairbairn's got an outing with one of the village guards,” said Larkin. “They're going to the village tavern.”

“Oh, they've got a tavern? What's the local ale like?” Eule asked.

“Eule, hauld your weesht!” exclaimed McClendon. “We'll go tomorrow night.”

“I wouldn't know,” said Larkin. “I just peeked in during our recon. None of my team have been either.”

“So I'm going also to be giving a Google review for you lot? Fun!” said Fairbairn as she rolled her eyes. She headed for the door with Helena and the two women went to the monastery gate. A few minutes later Edward arrived. He wore a maroon tunic with a leather belt, blue leggings, brown leather slippers, a green cape and a maroon cap with a feather in it.
