The field was alive with whispers. Under the sweltering summer sun, golden wheat stretched endlessly, swaying as though breathing.
At its heart stood the Scarecrow a thing stitched from vines and straw, its acorn eyes glinting darkly, its firefly halo now a swarm of cold, unblinking lights.
Local children dared each other to run past it at dusk, but none got far before the field swallowed them whole. They said if you listened closely, you could hear their voices calling from the stalks pleading, warning.
Some nights, when the moon was black, the Scarecrow moved. Slowly. Patiently. Seeds and bones rattling in the dark, it hunted for anyone foolish enough to linger after the fireflies turned red.
It did not guard the harvest. It fed on it.*
