This story exists right now as an alpha version—that is to say a "just get it down on paper" kind of story, so it's a bit disjointed and slow especially for a start. Someday i may even finish it, but who knows.

The city of Arista was the perfect amalgam of past and present, of ancient traditions practiced for millennia and the ever-advancing wonders of technology, and there was no better example of this fusion than the sprawling marketplace which lined the brick paved streets.

Under the gentle fluttering of blue and orange canvas, the market sang with the voices of a dozen species and the steady thrum of footfalls day and night. It was the beating heart of this city, and not once did its melodic rhythm ever tire.

As a young murid who grew up within that endless rhythm, Mika was no stranger to the markets, yet she never ceased to be amazed by what await around every corner and beneath every stall. Vendors’ shouts filled the air with temptations of treasures, deals, and wonders of a lifetime. Although she would have loved to be whisked away by their enticing offers, she could not allow herself to be distracted.

“’scuse me,” Mika raised her voice so the two larger canids might hear.

Without waiting for a response, she ducked between two larger canids, holding her empty brown satchel to her side, not to protect it from her imposing compatriots, but to keep it from disturbing their hushed conversation. Her large mouse ears twitched subtly against their grumbled slights, but she ignored them and instead pushed forward through the throngs of people with unwavering determination.

She moved through the bustling crowd with practiced grace honed since childhood, her long golden braid helping her stand out against the backdrop of dark fur with its shimmering streaks of faint chestnut beneath the midday sun. Her white blouse with its soft silken texture brushing quietly against her fur, clinging to her graceful figure as she pushed forward.

The sounds of myriad herbs and spices on offer set her imagination ablaze with recipes that made her mouth water in anticipation. Unfortunately, they would have to wait for another day; today, she was here running an errand.

Nose as her guide, she followed the unmistakably sweet scent of a torigin until she came to a small, covered stall nestled at the crook of two converging alleys. A tall feline sat behind the stall, guarding the freshly trimmed bundles of torigin, though given his dead-eyed expression, Mika might have been able to take the entire lot without so much as a raised eyebrow from him.

“Good morning,” she offered.

He managed a quiet grunt.

Mika paid him no mind, instead turning her focus to the selection of torigin laid before her. At a glance, they all might have appeared the same, but her brown eyes were sharper than most; she could see the subtlest differences between each bundle, in particular, the tiniest nibbles taken from their leaves
