James McPherson, a robber with a unique destiny. The bastard of a Scottish laird and a gypsy. His father recognized him and gave him an education, but died a few years later while trying to return cattle stolen by bandits. 

After the death of his father, McPherson was taken up by his mother's gypsy community. Growing up, he organized a gang and began robbing the caravans of the rich lords of the counties of Banff, Aberdeen and Moray. He was especially hated by Duff of Braco, a Scottish lord loyal to the English crown. A few years later, Dafa soldiers captured James after a fierce fight and he was sentenced to death. 

The night before the execution, MacPherson wrote a song, and going to the scaffold, he played it standing under the gallows. After the performance, he addressed the crowd with the question of who would play this song on his grave. Surrounded by English soldiers, no one dared to agree and in a rage he smashed his violin. Despite this, it later became one of the most popular songs among Scottish bards and eventually this song was immortalized by the famous poet Robert Burns.

The author of the Russian text was Samuel Marshak, a Soviet poet who, while studying in England, became a fan of classical English literature and became the most recognized translator of English literature of his time, elected in 1960 Honorary President of the Robert Burns Society.
